He said: “Let us shift from traditional concepts like writing good press releases and doing artistic works and instead re-define marketing as a new concept in the country’s economic development.” He was speaking during a Marketers Night on Friday. The event brought together over 100 marketers. It was prepared by Marketing Africa to enable marketers to share experiences in an effort to improve their performance.According to him, a survey of the top 50 multi-national companies indicates that 80 per cent of the managing directors and most marketing heads are foreigners. Mr Walingo said many marketers had little information of what they were doing. “Business indicators are changing every day and the companies need to expand. You should remain relevant to your firms and move their operations forward as well,” he said. He urged them to be honest and innovative. He also advised upcoming marketers to create a network with their experienced mentors in the marketing field to develop their career. According to him, mentors are experienced people and are willing to share knowledge with upcoming marketers and teach them ethnics to build their profession and general job performance. Although marketing departments were important in companies, he argued that most post holders lacked integrity, passion and commitment required to run them.“Most marketers are still working from 8am to 5pm but a few others leave their home when it is dark and leave office in dark…How do we compete then?” Some marketers who attended the event appreciated the speech and asked the speaker to be their mentor. “I have been looking for a good mentor for a long time and today I have found the best one,” Mwananchi Communications Ltd marketing manager Beda Biswalo said.
